The tabletop anti-recorder is a portable unit for the meeting you are having right now, in a room you do not control. It emits 360 degrees of ultrasonic interference that corrupts what nearby microphones capture, and because the emission is ultrasonic, nobody in the room hears it. How ultrasonic masking differs from white noise

A white noise generator fills the room with audible sound so a recorder cannot separate speech from it. It works, and everyone present has to sit in the noise for the duration — which is why long meetings under broadband masking are tiring.

Ultrasonic interference works above the range of human hearing but inside the range that microphones and their electronics respond to. The interference lands in the recording as distortion that buries speech, while the room itself stays quiet. For a negotiation, a deposition or a board discussion, that is a meaningfully better experience — you get the protection without conducting the meeting over a hiss.

A small number of people report sensitivity to ultrasonic emission, and some hearing aids and pets respond to it. Worth knowing before a long session.

Placement is the whole game

Coverage is 360 degrees but it is not unlimited, and effectiveness falls with distance. The unit belongs in the middle of the table, among the phones and devices, not on a credenza at the side of the room. The rule is simple: the interference has to reach the microphone more strongly than your voice does. If a recorder is closer to the talkers than the unit is, the masking loses.

Anything physically blocking the emitter — a laptop lid, a folder, a bag — casts a shadow. Clear line of sight to the table surface matters.

Four hours of battery sets the meeting length. Charge between sessions rather than relying on a partial charge, and toggle it on before people sit down, not after the conversation has started.

What it does and does not cover

It protects the conversation happening in that room while it is running. It does not find devices, it does nothing about cameras — a camera watching a whiteboard does not care about audio interference — and it does nothing for the room when it is switched off.
