The threat picture, specifically
Hospitality security is unusual in that the people you are managing are your guests, and almost every incident starts as a customer service problem. The security failure is rarely the intruder. It is the ejection that turned into a fight in the car park, the queue that became a crush at a single door, the guest who could not get help at 2am, and the medical incident that was not spotted for ten minutes because everybody was watching the stage.
Hotels and resorts carry a specific set: key control and room access, trespass and non-guest use of pools and facilities, party complaints that escalate, theft from rooms and vehicles, and the responsibility to notice indicators of human trafficking and exploitation at the front desk and in the corridors. That last one is a training obligation now, not a discretionary nicety, and it is one of the few security functions where a correct observation genuinely changes somebody’s life.
Licensed premises carry the alcohol problem, which is really a liability problem. Overservice, ID fraud, and the moment of refusal are where injuries and lawsuits are generated. Events carry the crowd problem: ingress bottlenecks, egress under stress, unattended items, and — in Arizona for much of the year — heat casualties, which at an outdoor event are a more probable mass-casualty driver than anything an attacker will do.
Arizona’s calendar concentrates all of this. Spring training, golf, festivals, conventions and a long outdoor event season mean surge staffing against a fixed local labour pool, in temperatures that dictate water, shade and rotation planning as security decisions rather than hospitality ones.
