Battery Operated
Battery-operated cameras and devices for positions with no mains power — gates, outbuildings, fence lines, construction sites, vacant property and anywhere running cable is impractical or would reveal the position.
Runtime is the whole decision. Manufacturer battery figures assume light use. Real-world runtime depends on how often the device wakes, whether it records continuously or on motion, how cold or hot it gets, and how hard the radio works to reach your network. Assume materially less than the stated figure, and plan the service interval around the worst case rather than the average.
Arizona heat is a real factor. Battery chemistry degrades faster at sustained high temperature, and a device in direct summer sun runs far hotter than ambient. Shade the position if you can, and expect shorter service intervals through summer than the specification suggests.
Think about access. The best battery position is often the least accessible one. Before mounting, work out what changing the battery actually involves — a position that needs a ladder and two people gets serviced late, and a dead camera records nothing.
Where power exists or can be run, hardwired equipment is more reliable and needs no maintenance schedule.
