What the three ratings actually protect against
Watertight and dust-tight. This is the rating that matters for field work. Equipment does not usually die in a dramatic drop; it dies from a rained-on truck bed, a dusty job site, or condensation in a case that went from a cold vehicle into a warm building. A sealed case removes all three.
Impact resistant. The shell spreads the load of a drop so the contents never take the point impact. Most damage to portable electronics happens in transit rather than in use, which is where a hard case pays for itself.
The pressure relief valve. This is the part people ignore and then curse. A sealed case that travels between altitudes — or simply from an air-conditioned office to a hot vehicle — builds a pressure differential across the seal. The valve equalizes it so the case opens normally instead of fighting you, and so the seal is not stressed. Keep it clear, and do not tape over it.
Getting the foam right
Pick-and-pull foam lets you cut a fitted bed for whatever you are carrying. Two things are worth doing properly the first time: leave at least half an inch of foam between each item and the case wall, and between items, because that margin is what absorbs a drop; and cut a finger notch at the edge of each cavity, or you will be prying a snug-fitting instrument out with a screwdriver. Pull the cubes slowly — a torn cavity does not grow back.
Lay everything out on the foam and mark it before you pull a single cube. Plan for cables and a charger in the layout, not as an afterthought stuffed on top of the lid.
