Accessories
The accessories that make surveillance equipment actually work in the field: mounts, power supplies, cabling, adapters, storage, brackets and housings. These are the parts most people forget to order and then wait on.
Buy these at the same time as the camera. A camera without the right mount ends up cable-tied to a downpipe at the wrong angle. A recorder without enough storage overwrites the night you needed. An outdoor run without weatherproof connectors fails at the first monsoon. In our own field work, the difference between an install that lasts three years and one that fails in three months is almost always a $20 accessory.
Power is the usual failure point. Check voltage and amperage against the device, not against what looks similar. Long cable runs cause voltage drop, so a supply that works on the bench can under-power a camera forty metres away. If the position has no mains power nearby, plan for a battery or solar solution before you commit to the location.
Storage. Use surveillance-rated drives and cards. Consumer media is designed for occasional writes; continuous recording wears it out fast and it tends to fail silently, which you discover only when you go looking for footage.
