Hard-wired, and it looks straight down. Built for the long placement over a fixed point — a safe, a till, a stock cabinet, a doorway you can mount directly above — where a battery unit would eventually need someone to walk up to it, which is exactly what a discreet installation cannot afford.

Bottom view or side view? Decide before you buy
Bottom view — this unit. Looks vertically down at whatever sits beneath it. The subject is close and centred, so faces are larger and more usable than from any other ceiling position — provided the person comes to the spot you are watching. Right for a safe, a cash drawer, a stock or medication cupboard, a single doorway.
Side view. Looks horizontally across the room, for when the question is about the room rather than one point in it.
The housings are indistinguishable from below. Lens direction is the entire decision, and the wrong one produces an excellent recording of the wrong surface.
Plan the cable before the position
Continuous power is the reason to choose a wired unit, and the cable is the price. A cord running visibly to a ceiling fitting undoes the concealment instantly; a run through the ceiling void, where wiring already goes, does not. Work out the route first, then pick the mounting point — and mount directly above the thing you mean to watch, because a foot of offset puts it at the edge of the frame.
A smoke-detector housing is not a smoke detector
No sensor, no alarm. Fit it in addition to working smoke alarms, never in place of one, and never where it removes required coverage. Fire codes specify alarm count and placement; a dummy in an alarm’s position is both a violation and a hazard.
Records to a card up to 64 GB with motion triggering and app alerts. More hidden cameras.
