Side view or bottom view? Decide before you buy

Side view — this unit. Looks horizontally across the room from the ceiling. Use it when the subject is somewhere in the room: who came in, where they moved, what happened at the far desk. It covers more floor area than any other ceiling position.

Bottom view. Looks straight down at a fixed point — a safe, a till, a cabinet, a doorway you can mount above.

Mount this one above a safe and you will record the wall behind it very well indeed. The housings look identical from below; lens direction is the whole choice.

Aim it along the room, not at a wall

A side-view lens sees a wedge, not a sphere. Mounted in a corner it covers almost everything; mounted in the middle of a ceiling facing the nearest wall it covers almost nothing. Choose the corner or edge position that looks back along the length of the room and takes in the doorway.

Expect distance

Ceiling height means range, and range means small faces. This unit establishes events and movement reliably. It is not the one to depend on for identifying someone across a large room — that needs a camera at seated eye level and closer.

A smoke-detector housing is not a smoke detector

No sensor, no alarm. Fit it alongside working smoke alarms, never instead of one, and never where it removes required coverage.
