An alarm clock sits where people actually are — a nightstand, a desk, a reception counter — and that is the entire reason to choose it. At roughly head height and a few feet from the subject, it records faces at the angle and distance that make them identifiable, which is precisely what a ceiling or wall unit cannot do. Battery and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, so it moves anywhere without a cable.

Narrow view, usable faces
The trade runs the opposite way from a high-mounted camera. An alarm clock covers a much narrower slice of the room, and anything set down in front of it blocks the view completely. Within that slice, though, it produces the most usable footage of any housing in the range: close, level with the face, pointed at where people sit or stand rather than down at the tops of their heads.
Use a wall or ceiling unit when the question is what happened in this room; use this when the question is who was it. When both matter, the honest answer is two cameras — they run on the same app, so it is one system either way, not two.
Things that go wrong with desk-height placements
A clock on a nightstand gets moved, turned, dusted and unplugged by other people far more often than a ceiling fixture does, so verify the aim periodically instead of assuming. Avoid pointing it straight at a window or a lamp — brightness behind a subject is what turns a face into a silhouette. And leave the front clear: the one object someone sets down in front of it is invariably the one that matters.
