Know the rules before you place it

A TV remote with a 1280×1080 camera, PIR-triggered recording and a date and time overlay. It is sold for nanny-cam use, office theft and loss prevention — all situations where a visible camera changes behaviour.

Where you may lawfully place one is narrower than most buyers assume. Recording where a person has a reasonable expectation of privacy — bathrooms, bedrooms in someone else’s home, changing areas — is a crime. Audio is governed separately and more strictly than video. In a workplace, a legitimate purpose and usually a written policy are expected. Ask your attorney before placing it, not after.

Getting usable footage

Put it where a remote normally sits and where the lens covers the doorway or the area in question at face height — a device aimed at the ceiling records nothing useful. PIR triggering saves storage but misses slow, quiet entries, so for a short high-stakes window, continuous recording on a fresh card is the safer choice. Recordings save automatically if the battery dies, which is the failure mode that ruins most covert placements.

The date stamp is the point

Set the clock before first use. An overlay with the correct date and time is much of what makes footage usable later; a recording that cannot be placed in time is easy to challenge.

If it becomes evidence

Pull the card, copy the files, stop using the device and write down who placed it, when and where. Work from the copy. Our examiners authenticate and enhance video and can produce it properly if the matter goes anywhere formal — and a licensed investigator can gather it in a way that survives challenge in the first place.
