The RD-30 is the unit you carry when you cannot carry a case. It is a pocket detector that does three separate jobs — optical lens finding, wireless RF detection, and wired signal detection — which is unusual at this size, because most pocket detectors do only the RF half and leave you blind to the most common threat.

3 Modes of Detections

  1. Lens finder
  2. Wireless RF Detection
  3. Wired (non transmitting) Signal Detection
  • Quickly finds hidden cameras using the hidden camrea lens finder
  • Can be used as wireless audio bugs sweeper
  • Can Detected Wired Cameras
  • Extremely small pocket-sized and light weight detector
  • 4 section light scale to show RF signal strength
  • Vibration detection mode for complete discreet operation
  • Camera finder lens for wired or wireless cameras detection
  • LawMate Part #RD-30

Why three modes matters

The three detection modes are not redundant. Each one catches a class of device the others miss.

The lens finder works on retroreflection: light from the unit’s LEDs enters a camera lens, bounces off the sensor and comes straight back at you as a hard bright point. This is the only method that finds a camera which is powered off, or recording to an internal card and transmitting nothing at all. Neither RF mode can see those devices, and they are extremely common.

Wireless RF detection catches devices that are actively transmitting — a camera streaming to a phone, an audio bug sending to a nearby receiver, a tracker checking in. The four-section light scale gives you signal strength, which is how you actually locate something: you do not read the bars as a yes/no, you walk the room and follow the direction the bars rise.

Wired signal detection covers devices hard-wired into building power or a run of cable — the ones that neither transmit nor rely on a battery, and that a pure RF sweep walks straight past.

Using it without giving yourself away

Vibration mode is the reason this unit works in occupied spaces. A detector that beeps in a hotel lobby or an office announces exactly what you are doing; set it to vibrate and the sweep reads as someone checking their pocket. Switch your own phone and Wi-Fi off before the RF pass, or you will spend the sweep chasing your own signal.

For the optical pass, kill the lights and close the blinds — the retroreflection is bright, but it needs contrast to stand out. Work a grid rather than wandering, and concentrate on anything at seated eye level facing a bed, a desk or a doorway. Smoke detectors, alarm clocks, USB chargers, air purifiers and picture frames are the usual housings.

Honest limits

This is a pocket unit, not a spectrum analyzer. It tells you that something is transmitting; it does not tell you on what band, what protocol, or whether it is a bug or the neighbor’s router. Against a device that transmits in short scheduled bursts rather than continuously, a handheld sweep can easily land in a quiet window and find nothing. If you have a specific, concrete reason to believe a space is compromised and a handheld pass comes up empty, that is the point where professional TSCM earns its cost — different equipment, and a methodology built around exactly that failure mode.

If you find something

Do not unplug it and do not handle it further. It is potential evidence and how it was preserved will matter later. Photograph it in place, note the time, and call us. See also RF and GPS detection and camera and lens finders, or book a consultation.
