The PV-500L4i is the recorder half of a covert video setup. It takes an analog camera — a button camera, a cone lens, a fixture camera — and does the recording, storage and playback, which is why it shows up in almost every professional covert kit: the camera can be tiny and cheap to replace, while the part that has to be reliable stays in your pocket.
Set up your own sting with this handheld DVR. The DVR542WF can connect to your smart device via the LawMate app making it easy to review and control your video stream remotely.

The Wi-Fi is the useful part
The i in the model number is IP capability, and it changes the operation entirely. Connected to a smart device through the LawMate app, you can confirm framing before you commit, start and stop remotely, and verify you are actually getting the shot — instead of discovering after the fact that the camera spent the whole encounter pointed at a wall. For a surveillance setup you only get one attempt at, that verification step is the entire value proposition.
Planning around the specs
Four hours of battery. Plan the operation around that number, not around the storage capacity. If the window is longer, you need external power or a second unit — a recorder that dies at hour four has recorded nothing that matters if the event happened at hour five.
D1 video. D1 is standard-definition. That is entirely adequate for showing that an interaction occurred, who was present, and what was handed over. It is not adequate for reading a licence plate across a parking lot or a serial number across a room. Frame tight, get close, and do not count on enlarging detail later.
Motion detection recording. Useful for long unattended placements because it conserves both battery and storage, but it clips the beginning of events and can miss slow movement entirely. For anything where the opening seconds matter, record continuously.
Date and time stamp. Set the clock before deployment and verify it against a known-correct source. A timestamp that is wrong by an hour is worse than no timestamp at all if the footage is ever examined.
The legal frame
Arizona is a one-party consent state for audio under A.R.S. § 13-3005 — you may record a conversation you are a party to. Other states require all parties to consent, and interstate calls can pull in the stricter rule. Video carries a separate constraint: recording where a person has a reasonable expectation of privacy — restrooms, changing areas, medical settings, private residences — can be criminal regardless of the audio rule. Recording people you have no authority to record is not a technical question, it is a legal one; ask counsel before deployment.

Pair it with a camera from surveillance equipment. If you would rather the documentation was done by a licensed Arizona agency than done by you, see private investigations. Footage that needs to be authenticated or enhanced is digital forensics work.
