Wide angle: what it gives and what it costs

A wide-angle lens covers a room from a single mounting point, which is usually what you want — one camera in a corner sees a whole office, where a narrow lens would need three. The cost is at the edges: wide lenses compress distance and distort near the frame borders, so a face at the far side of a room is smaller and less resolvable than the same face would be on a narrower lens.

The practical rule is to frame for the thing that matters. If you need to establish that an event occurred and who was in the room, wide is right. If you need to identify a face or read something in someone’s hand, get the camera closer rather than counting on enlarging the footage later.
