What ICW means, and why it is the most important word on this page

ICW stands for in conjunction with. An ICW plate achieves its rating only when it is worn over a specified soft-armor backer — for these plates, Safe Life Defense specifies Level IIIA or IIIA+ soft armor. Worn alone in a carrier with nothing behind it, the plate is operating outside the configuration it was tested in, and the rating on the label does not describe what you are wearing.

This is the single most common and most consequential misunderstanding in body armor. ICW plates exist for a good reason: pairing a plate with a soft backer lets the system reach a high protection class at lower weight and thickness than a stand-alone plate of the same class. That is a real engineering advantage for anyone who has to wear armor for hours. It is only an advantage if the backer is actually there.

Safe Life Defense rates these plates at Level IV when used with Level IIIA or IIIA+ soft armor, stopping up to .30-06 steel-core armor-piercing rounds. If you do not already own a compatible backer, budget for one in the same purchase.

Level IV, and what it is for

Safe Life Defense rates these ICW plates to stop up to .30-06 steel-core armor-piercing rounds when worn with IIIA or IIIA+ soft armor. Stopping a hardened penetrator core takes a hard strike face, which is why these plates are built from a ceramic (Al203) and ultra high molecular weight polyethylene construction.

A higher rating is not automatically the better choice. Plates built for armor-piercing threats are heavier than armor built for common lead-core rifle rounds. If your realistic threat picture is commonly available rifle ammunition rather than military AP, a lighter option such as FRAS® flexible rifle armor may match it better and weigh considerably less.

Choose the class that matches the threat you actually face, not the largest number available. Weight you cannot carry is protection you will not have.

Ceramic: handling, inspection and the drop problem

Ceramic composite plates work by fracturing to disperse energy. That mechanism is why they stop what they stop, and it is also why they are fragile in a specific way: a hard drop onto concrete can crack the strike face with no visible sign through the cover.

Practical consequences that should change how you handle these plates:

  • Never drop them. Set carriers down rather than tossing them into a truck bed or onto a tile floor.
  • Store them where they cannot fall — flat on a shelf or in a locker, not balanced on top of a locker or leaning against a wall.
  • Retire or professionally evaluate any plate that has been struck or dropped hard. “It looks fine” is not an inspection, because the damage is internal.
  • Inspect the cover regularly for punctures, water intrusion and delamination, and listen for any change when the plate is tapped or handled.

Sizing and fit

Armor protects what it covers. Measure from the jugular notch — the hollow at the base of the throat between the collarbones — down the center of the chest to roughly two inches above the navel. That distance is the plate height that fits you. Check it against the sizes offered on this page.

Safe Life Defense sizes these plates to its vests: 10″×12″ plates are for Safe Life Defense vest sizes XS and larger, and 8″×10″ plates are for vest sizes 2XS and smaller.

An oversized plate rides up into the throat when you sit, restricts bending at the waist, and covers less of what matters despite being larger. Test the assembled configuration in a vehicle seat, kneeling, and mounting a rifle if that applies, before committing to it for a shift.

Weight, and planning for it

A ceramic front-and-rear setup plus a carrier and side coverage is a substantial load, and the total climbs quickly once anything is added to the carrier. That is acceptable for a static post, a vehicle-based role, or gear staged for a specific contingency. It is much harder to justify for extended foot patrol in Arizona summer heat, where the honest answer is frequently a lower class worn consistently rather than the highest class left behind.

If the plates are a contingency item rather than daily wear, stage them where they can actually be reached: a carrier that can be donned one-handed, stored somewhere accessible rather than buried in a locked trunk under other equipment.

Backface deformation and multi-hit

A rating describes a stop under laboratory conditions with backface deformation inside the standard’s 44 millimeter limit — a ceiling, not a goal, measured into clay rather than into a person. Armor that stops a round still transfers energy, and blunt trauma behind a successful stop is an ordinary outcome.

Multi-hit behavior varies by construction and by spacing. Ceramic disperses energy by fracturing, so a second round landing on or near the first impact is landing on compromised material. Test protocols specify minimum shot separation for exactly this reason.

Legal notes

18 U.S.C. § 931 prohibits possession of body armor by anyone convicted of a violent felony, with a narrow employment exception, and many jurisdictions apply sentencing enhancements for use of armor during a crime. State purchase rules vary and a few restrict online or mail-order sale — confirm the rules where the order ships. General information, not legal advice.

If you are unsure whether ICW plates and a soft backer, or stand-alone plates, or flexible rifle armor best fits your role, the body armor levels guide compares them directly and our team can work through it with you.
