Side panels close the gap that a front-and-back vest leaves open. A standard carrier protects the chest and back; the ribs under your arms are covered by fabric and nothing else. These two HYPERLINE™ Level IIIA panels fill that area, and at 0.29 lbs each they do it without the weight penalty that usually makes people leave side protection at home.
HYPERLINE™ LEVEL IIIA SIDE ARMOR PANELS
Great for overlapping protection or extra coverage, these 2 Hyperline™ side panels are exactly what you need for low profile & lightweight side protection in level IIIA. Weighing only 0.29 lbs per panel, they are exceptionally easy to wear all day long.

What 0.29 lbs actually buys you
Weight is the reason side armor goes unworn. Panels that add meaningful bulk get skipped on long shifts, and armor in a locker protects nobody. At roughly a third of a pound per side, these stay on — which is the entire point of a low-profile panel.
The other use is overlap. Worn alongside a standard front panel, side panels cover the seam where the front panel ends and your arm begins, which is precisely where a torso is narrowest and least protected. If you already wear a IIIA vest and are wondering what the next upgrade is, closing that seam is usually a better spend than a heavier front panel.
Understanding Level IIIA
Level IIIA is a soft-armor rating tested against specified handgun threats, including higher-velocity handgun rounds. It is not a rifle rating. Rifle protection requires rifle-rated armor such as hard plates or FRAS® flexible rifle armor. If your threat assessment includes rifle rounds, these panels are not the answer; see the FRAS® Side Armor Panels.
Coverage is also literal: a panel protects the area it covers and nothing beyond its edge. Side panels reduce the exposed area; they do not eliminate it.
Fitting and care
These are used with Safe Life Defense tactical side straps, which are what hold the panels at the correct height and tension. Positioned properly, a side panel sits roughly level with the front panel and snug against the ribs; loose panels rotate and end up protecting an armpit instead of a torso.
Soft armor has a manufacturer-dated service life and the ballistic materials degrade with age, heat, moisture and repeated flexing. Store panels flat rather than folded or rolled, keep them out of a hot vehicle as a matter of routine, and replace them on the manufacturer’s schedule rather than on how they look.
One legal note: under 18 U.S.C. § 931, possession of body armor by a person convicted of a violent felony is a federal offense, with a narrow employment exception, and some states add their own restrictions. For most people in most states, purchase is otherwise unrestricted.
