FRAS® Rifle Plates – 8″x10″

The size that gets overlooked

Eight inches by ten is often presented as the “small” plate, which undersells what it is for. Safe Life Defense specifies the 8×10 plate for its vest sizes 2XS and smaller (10×12 is for XS and larger). Choosing it for a smaller vest is not settling for less protection; it is choosing the plate that actually fits, and fit is a protection variable rather than a comfort one.

An oversized plate is worse than a correctly sized one in three specific ways. It rides up into the throat when you sit, which is where a driver spends most of a shift. It restricts bending at the waist, so the wearer compensates by moving badly. And it extends past the torso where it cannot stop anything, adding weight and printing without adding coverage.

Measuring for it properly

Locate the jugular notch — the soft hollow at the base of the throat between the collarbones. Measure straight down the center of the chest to about two inches above the navel. That distance approximates the plate height you want. Then check width: the plate should cover the nipple line without wrapping so far around the ribs that it fouls your arms or a rifle stock.

Flexible rifle armor in a smaller footprint

What makes this panel different from a rigid plate of the same dimensions is that it conforms. It handles like soft armor, it follows the curve of the chest rather than bridging across it, and it does not create the flat, obvious rectangle that makes concealment difficult. For low-profile wear under ordinary clothing, that shape difference matters at least as much as the weight difference.

Confirm the rating and the configuration

Safe Life Defense publishes two ratings for FRAS® plates: a standalone rating (multi-hit .223/5.56 including SS109 and XM193, plus 7.62×39) and an ICW rating (multi-hit Level III+ for .308 and 7.62x54r when used in conjunction with IIIA or IIIA+ armor). The ICW rating applies only with that soft armor behind the plate.

Ratings also describe laboratory conditions with backface deformation held inside the standard’s limit. Armor that stops a round still transfers energy; blunt trauma behind a successful stop is a real outcome, not a rare one.

Carriers, and the case for side coverage

The panel is half the system. A concealable carrier with plate pockets suits daily protective work, investigations, and anyone who needs the armor to be invisible (Safe Life Defense does not recommend its Hyper Concealable™ carrier for FRAS® armor). An overt carrier suits a uniformed post. Whichever you choose, size the carrier to the plate and to the wearer — a correctly sized plate in an oversized carrier shifts around and defeats the fit you measured for.

Side panels cover the area under the arms, which is a meaningful gap in front-and-rear-only configurations. For a static post or anyone in a role with sustained exposure, they are worth the additional weight.

Storage, inspection and service life

Heat is the main threat to stored armor, and in Arizona it is not a marginal one. A closed vehicle reaches interior temperatures far above ambient for a large part of the year, and sustained heat degrades ballistic materials. Keep armor indoors where you can.

Store panels flat or hanging. Do not fold them repeatedly along the same line or leave them compressed under other gear. Wash the carrier cover according to the manufacturer’s instructions and never the ballistic panel itself. Inspect every few months for water intrusion, delamination, stiffness that was not there before, or any change in how the panel sounds or feels when flexed. Record the manufacture date and respect the stated service life.
