An 11 by 14 inch FRAS flexible rifle armor panel cut for a backpack rather than a vest. It gives rifle-rated protection to people who will not wear armor in normal life but want it within reach. It is heavier than the soft-armor backpack panels and stops rifle threats they cannot.

Slide this 11×14 plate into a backpack for protection against RIFLES like .223 and 5.56! At ONLY 5.3 pounds, this is the most protective and comfortable backpack armor on the market that can be carried by anyone, regardless of their size.
Rifle protection that lives in a bag
An 11×14 panel cut for a backpack is a different product from a plate meant for a carrier, and it solves a different problem. It is for people who will not wear armor during a normal day but want rifle-rated protection within reach: teachers and campus staff, clinicians, people who travel for work, parents, and anyone whose risk is low-probability and high-consequence.
The trade-off is honest and worth stating. A panel in a bag protects you only when the bag is between you and the threat, and only if you have the seconds to position it. That is a meaningful capability — a backpack held up or worn on the chest covers the vital area, and moving away from a threat with a rifle-rated panel across your back is materially better than moving away without one. It is not equivalent to wearing a carrier.
Why 11×14
The larger footprint is deliberate. A panel meant to be held or positioned quickly benefits from covering more area, because you will not have time to align it precisely the way a fitted carrier aligns automatically. It also matches the internal dimensions of most full-size backpacks, sitting flat against the back panel without bunching or cutting into the laptop sleeve.
Check the panel dimensions against your specific bag before ordering. Laptop compartments vary, and a panel that has to be forced in will deform the bag and sit at an angle rather than flat.
Flexible construction is the point here
A rigid plate in a backpack is a slab: it makes the bag uncomfortable, it does not follow the curve of your back, and it turns a daily carry item into something you stop carrying. Flexible rifle armor conforms, distributes weight across the back panel, and keeps the bag usable as a bag. Gear that stays in the bag is gear you have when it matters; gear that makes the bag unpleasant comes out within a month.
What this panel is rated to stop
Safe Life Defense rates FRAS™ Backpack Armor for .223 and 5.56 including Green Tip, M193, M855 and SS109, as well as 7.62×39 lead core ammo.
Also understand what a rating describes: a stop under laboratory conditions with backface deformation inside the standard’s limit. A panel held in front of you rather than worn against a carrier does not have a body behind it in the same way, but blunt force is still transmitted, and a panel that stops a round can still knock you back hard.
Using it, realistically
- Know where it is. A panel in a bag in a locked car is a panel you do not have. If the point is readiness, the bag has to be with you.
- Practice the movement once. Picking the bag up by the correct strap and getting it between you and a direction takes a few seconds the first time and almost none after you have done it deliberately twice.
- Front is better than back if you have the choice. Worn on the chest or held, the panel covers the heart and great vessels. Worn on the back it covers you while moving away, which is the more common use.
- Do not let it substitute for the plan. Knowing the exits, having a way to lock a door, and being able to communicate matter more often than the panel will.
Care and storage
Heat is the enemy of ballistic material, and a bag left in a vehicle through an Arizona summer is the worst case. Bring the bag indoors. Store the panel flat rather than folded or creased, and take it out of the bag periodically to inspect it: look for water intrusion, delamination, stiffness or crunching that was not there before, and any deformation from being wedged into a compartment that is too small.
Record the manufacture date and respect the manufacturer’s stated service life. A panel bought once and forgotten for a decade is not the protection you think you have.
Legal notes
Federal law at 18 U.S.C. § 931 prohibits possession of body armor by anyone convicted of a violent felony, subject to a narrow employment exception. State rules on purchase vary, and a handful of states restrict online or mail-order sale — confirm the rules where the order ships. Some workplaces and campuses also have their own policies about what may be brought on site; that is worth checking before rather than after. General information, not legal advice.
