HOW TO USE THIS (MULTIFUNCTIONAL)

  1. STANDALONE: Need to be light and agile? Use this Flexible Rifle Plate standalone in your favorite plate carrier for protection against common .223 and 5.56 rounds including Green Tip, M193, M855, SS109 as well as 7.62×39 lead core ammo.
  2. WITH YOUR IIIA+ VEST: (ICW Maximum Protection) Use this 10×12 plate in your IIIA or IIIA+ Vest plate pocket to achieve level III+ protection against threats up to .308 & 7.62x54r!
(Size 11×14 will not fit in Safe Life Defense vests.)
  3. BACKPACK ARMOR: Need protection on the go? Take this plate out of your soft armor vest and slide it into a backpack. Starting at ONLY 3.97 pounds, this is the most protective backpack armor on the market that can be carried by anyone, regardless of their size.

Why flexible rifle armor exists

Rifle protection has historically meant a rigid plate: ceramic, polyethylene or steel, sized to the torso and carried in a plate carrier. Rigid plates work, and they have two costs that determine whether they are actually worn. They do not conform to the body, so they print, they dig in when seated, and they fatigue the wearer over a shift. And they are fragile in specific ways — ceramic in particular can be cracked by a hard drop without any visible sign.

Flexible rifle armor addresses the first problem directly. It handles like soft armor, it conforms to the torso, and it carries rifle protection in a package a person will keep on for a full shift rather than put on when they expect trouble. For most people who need rifle protection, the armor they will actually wear is worth more than the armor with the highest number on the label.

Sizing: 10×12 and how to confirm it is right for you

Safe Life Defense sizes its FRAS® plates to its vests: 10×12 plates are for Safe Life Defense vest sizes XS and larger, and 8×10 plates are for vest sizes 2XS and smaller. The 11×14 size fits plate carriers that accept 11×14 plates, but it will not fit Safe Life Defense vests.

Measure rather than guess. Find the jugular notch, the hollow at the base of the throat between the collarbones. From there, measure down the center of the chest to roughly two inches above the navel. That measurement, not your shirt size, is what the plate height should approximate. Width should cover the nipple line without wrapping so far around that it restricts the arms or interferes with mounting a rifle.

If you are using a third-party plate carrier, check the plate size it accepts before ordering. An oversized plate rides up into the throat when you sit, restricts bending at the waist, and in practice covers less of what matters.

Stand-alone versus in-conjunction-with

This distinction accounts for more mistakes than any other in body armor, so check it on this page before ordering. A stand-alone plate achieves its rating by itself. An in-conjunction-with plate achieves its rating only when worn over a specified soft-armor backer, usually a Level IIIA panel. ICW plates are lighter and thinner and they are genuinely rated — but the rating is conditional, and wearing one in a carrier with nothing behind it means wearing something that has not been tested in the configuration you are using.

Safe Life Defense publishes two ratings for FRAS® plates: a standalone rating (multi-hit .223/5.56 including SS109 and XM193, plus 7.62×39) and an ICW rating (multi-hit Level III+ for .308 and 7.62x54r when used in conjunction with IIIA or IIIA+ armor). The ICW rating applies only with that soft armor behind the plate.

Reading the rating honestly

A ballistic rating means this construction stopped a specified list of rounds at a specified velocity under laboratory conditions, with backface deformation held within the standard’s limit. It does not mean the panel stops everything not on the list, and it says nothing about the fifth round landing in the same place.

Backface deformation is the part most buyers never look at. Armor that stops a round still transfers energy into the body, and the standard’s 44 millimeter limit is a ceiling rather than a goal, measured into clay backing rather than a person. Two products with the same class can behave quite differently here.

Safe Life Defense describes FRAS® plates by the threats they are rated against, not by an NIJ class. Read that threat list rather than inferring a rating from a product family or a different configuration.

Wearing it, and what to pair it with

Flexible rifle armor goes into a carrier, and the carrier decides the comfort as much as the armor does. A concealable carrier under a uniform shirt or ordinary clothing suits a full-day protective detail or an investigator who needs the protection not to announce itself. An overt tactical carrier suits a post where visibility is part of the deterrent and speed of access matters more than discretion.

Front and rear coverage is the baseline. Side panels address the gap under the arms, which is where a significant share of torso hits arrive in real incidents, and they are worth considering for anyone standing a static post.

Care, storage and the Arizona problem

Ballistic packages do not last forever, and heat is their enemy. A closed vehicle in an Arizona summer reaches interior temperatures far above ambient for months at a time, and sustained heat degrades the materials in both soft armor and polyethylene-based rifle protection. Storing armor in a truck year-round is the single most common care error we see in this state.

Store panels flat or hanging, not folded repeatedly along the same crease and not compressed under weight. Keep the carrier cover clean per the manufacturer’s instructions — wash the cover, not the ballistic panel — and inspect periodically for water intrusion, delamination, unusual stiffness, or crunching sounds that were not there before. Note the manufacture date and treat the manufacturer’s stated service life as a real limit rather than a suggestion.

Before you buy: the legal part

Federal law at 18 U.S.C. § 931 prohibits possession of body armor by anyone convicted of a violent felony, with a narrow employment exception, and using armor during the commission of a crime carries sentencing enhancements in many jurisdictions. State rules vary: a few states restrict online or mail-order purchase and require an in-person transaction, and some municipalities add their own requirements. Arizona does not currently restrict purchase by lawful buyers, but if you are shipping elsewhere, confirm that state’s rules first. This is general information, not legal advice.

Not sure which configuration fits your role? Our guide to body armor levels walks the classes and the trade-offs, or talk to a protection specialist about the threat you are actually facing.
