Soft armor stops handgun rounds, edged weapons and blunt strikes. It does not stop rifle rounds — that needs hard plates or flexible rifle armor, both of which drop into the plate pockets of most carriers here.
Panels and carriers are separate decisions. The panel sets the protection level; the carrier decides whether the officer actually wears it for twelve hours. Many teams buy one panel set and two carriers — concealable for plain-clothes work, external or uniform-shirt for posts where presence matters — and move the panels in seconds.
Choosing a level. Level IIIA covers common handgun rounds plus strike and slash, and suits most security and investigative work. The enhanced IIIA+ options add spike and stab resistance, which matters in corrections, hospital security, transport and crowd work, where the realistic threat is an improvised point rather than a firearm. Thinner premium panels cost more and are worth it for long outdoor shifts, where bulk and heat decide whether armor stays properly fastened.
Fit, care and service life. Order to measured chest and waist over the base layer worn on duty, not shirt size; the panel should sit about two finger widths below the collarbone. Wipe panels with a damp cloth and air dry flat — never machine wash, never fold for storage. Wash the carrier separately. Soft armor carries a five-year warranty measured from the manufacture date printed on the panel, not the purchase date, so read the label on any inherited vest.
Before you order. Federal law prohibits anyone convicted of a violent felony from possessing body armor. If this is for a contract, check whether the client specifies a level in writing.
