Where freight is actually lost
The image most people carry of cargo theft — a truck taken at gunpoint — is the rarest version of it and the least of the industry’s problems. Most freight is lost quietly. It is lost in a yard on a Friday night because the gate log is a clipboard. It is lost to a fictitious pickup, where somebody with a convincing rate confirmation and a stolen carrier identity collects a load that is then legitimately signed for and never seen again. It is lost to double brokering, where the carrier you vetted was never the carrier who showed up. It is lost by pilferage, a few cases at a time, over months, by somebody who works there. And it is lost in transit at a truck stop within the first two hundred miles of the shipper’s dock, which is where the majority of in-transit theft still happens because that is where drivers first stop.
Arizona sits on the routes that matter. The I-10 corridor runs from the Los Angeles basin through Phoenix and on to Tucson and El Paso; I-19 carries northbound freight from Nogales, and the Mariposa crossing moves an enormous share of the country’s winter produce; I-8 offers an alternative that avoids the metro entirely. The West Valley distribution build-out around Goodyear, Buckeye and Glendale has put millions of square feet of new warehouse next to that corridor in under a decade, much of it staffed by contract labour, much of it with yards designed for throughput rather than control. Combine high-value freight, a fast border, and a drive time to a major metro measured in hours, and you have the conditions that organised cargo crews look for.
